Hands On Hartford

Not Goodbye, but See You Soon

September 16, 2018

Serika Walker recently completed two years of service here at Hands On Hartford as an AmeriCorp VISTA Member.  For the last year she has served as a VISTA Leader on the Hartford Thrive! Project, a multi-agency VISTA project here in Hartford.  She has made a huge difference in the lives of many of our Hartford neighbors and also in the hearts of all of us at Hands On Hartford.  Here is her reflection on her time with us.

I can definitely say I learned a number things from the last two years here at Hands On Hartford. As I look back, my activities ranged from facilitating meetings and events for the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau, to leading a community service project with 10-15 people, learning about local resources for the public, and becoming a hype person/DJ for our annual events. The list goes on! However, the people I have met here are an extended family, and I am grateful that I had a chance to experience this type of love, collaboration, and compassion in this organization. I have grown here, but I’m ready to spread my knowledge and continue to grow. The one thing I can bring with me is a quote I would use after my Faces of Homelessness Events: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”  I want to continue to make changes in other individuals’ lives, that’s how you leave an impact. So this is not a goodbye, but a see you soon Hands On Hartford. Thank you!
