Course Description
A course in autobiography is a chance to tell the story you know best: your own. This class will blend short group discussions with in-class time to write. My job is to help you when you are stuck, facilitate class discussions that spark your interest, widen your sense of the possible, and reinforce that autobiography class is a safe place.
In the first class I will give students their own folder, encouraging participants to think of an autobiography as a book about one's life. The class brainstorms a long table contents, while students write down relevant ideas in their own lives in the folders. I ask them to check the three easiest topics, and they are off.
About the Teacher
Mally Cox-Chapman is the author of three books. That means she has spend a lot of years in a room by herself. To balance the solitude, she has taught a class in autobiography to lots of different folks: 4th graders, 8th graders, high school seniors, alumni of that school, and on a Navajo reservation. As she says, I was particularly moved to discover in a small village in the Dominican Republic that people who did not think their story mattered discovered how much it mattered to themselves , and to their community, because it was written down. I always learn something from my students, I am lookin forward to learning from you.
Ground Rules of The Class
- In class discussion, it is always okay to pass. I will check with you to see if you want to contribute later
- No put downs and no sarcasm
- What is said in class stays in the class, unless you give permission to share
