A Little Soup, A Few Flowers, and a Whole Lot of Heart
Linda has been part of the Hands On Hartford family since 2017, bringing her talents, creativity, and big heart wherever they’re needed. We’re excited to introduce you to Linda and celebrate all that she brings to HOH!
A Few Words from Linda: I started volunteering at Hands on Hartford (HOH) in 2017 as I was preparing to lighten my practice as a mental health professional and explore new ways to volunteer my time and talents. I’ve always loved to cook, have taught cooking for over 30 years, and wrote my first cookbook in 2015. In many ways, cooking is therapy for me. My career as a counselor also aligns with what HOH does—helping others, lifting others, and giving people hope through its many programs.
My first job in the kitchen was prep. Eventually, I asked the chef if I could make a soup. After that first soup, I gained confidence—and so did the chef in me. That led to making granola, spreads, tahini, chili, hummus, vegan pastry, and platters for catering. Then Covid hit, and it hit Hands on Hartford hard.
When the kitchen reopened, I returned and made a few soups. One day, I chatted with Molly Reynolds about flowers they were receiving from local florists. Before long, I was creating large arrangements for the entryway and dining room, along with smaller table arrangements. So every week I get to do two of my favorite things: cook and play with flowers.
I continue to be impressed by the HOH staff. They create an energy of positivity, cooperation, and enthusiasm that helps staff and clients alike be their best selves. The volunteers and kitchen team are incredibly helpful and cheerful. And when breakfast and lunch orders come flying in, that kitchen can buzz! The speed and skill feel like a chaotic ballet—my favorite kind of chaos.
There are many ways to volunteer at Hands on Hartford, and staff are happy to give tours to prospective volunteers. Helping others is one of the ways we are here for. Hands on Hartford does it beautifully.
